A dynamic outside back whose speed and multi‑sport pedigree translate seamlessly to elite competition
Jess Gentle is an accomplished multi‑code athlete whose rapid rise in rugby league has been underpinned by an elite sporting foundation. Born in Coffs Harbour, NSW, Jess excelled across multiple sports from a young age, representing Australia at schoolgirl level in soccer and earning recognition for her athletic and academic achievements during her formative years.
After completing school, Jess continued her sporting development in the United States, spending six years playing college soccer with the University of Wyoming. That experience refined her speed, endurance, and competitive mindset, while also exposing her to high‑performance environments and international competition.
Jess transitioned to rugby league in 2022 and made an immediate impact at representative level, playing for NSW Country and scoring two tries in the Harvey Norman National Championships final. Her performances throughout the campaign earned her the NSW Country Women’s Player of the Year award, highlighting both her consistency and match‑winning ability.
Later that season, Jess joined the Newcastle Knights NRLW program, making her NRLW debut against St George Illawarra and scoring a try in a convincing win. In 2023, she signed with the Canberra Raiders for their inaugural NRLW season, adding further top‑tier experience to her resume.
In addition to rugby league, Jess remains a dominant presence in rugby sevens, where her pace, footwork, and finishing ability have been instrumental in multiple tournament victories. Her ability to transition between codes reflects her adaptability, professionalism, and strong rugby IQ.
Alongside her professional sporting career, Jess is a qualified PDHPE teacher with additional qualifications in special education. She is currently teaching at Hunter Sports High School, where her lived experience as an elite athlete strengthens her impact in athlete development, engagement, and mentoring. Her work in education reflects the same values she brings to sport: discipline, resilience, and a commitment to helping others reach their potential.
Known for her explosive speed, work ethic, and competitive edge, Jess continues to pursue opportunities at the highest levels of women’s rugby league and sevens, while building a career defined by resilience, versatility, and elite performance standards.
