Defying Spinocerebellar Ataxia with resilience, spirit, and precision - Anthony proves disability golf is a platform for greatness.

Biography

Anthony Keenan is an All Abilities golfer whose remarkable journey began after life‑changing medical challenges. Diagnosed with Spinocerebellar Ataxia, a degenerative neurological condition affecting balance, coordination, speech, and motor skills, Anthony has rebuilt his athletic identity through the game of golf.

At age 35, he survived a serious heart attack that further impacted his balance and memory, ending his playing days in rugby league and rugby union - sports in which he had long excelled.

Yet it was disability golf that reignited his competitive drive, providing physical stability, cognitive stimulation, and a vital source of purpose. He quickly embraced the sport, training consistently and competing across Australia and abroad.

Anthony now stands as one of Australia’s strongest All Abilities competitors, ranked 136th globally and 9th nationally, with earlier career rankings placing him between 300–380 worldwide depending on classification and event season.  His dedication led to his selection for the Queensland Special Olympics team for the 2026 Nationals, marking another major milestone in his progression.

His commitment extends internationally, having competed in the Canadian All Abilities Championship and prepared for upcoming tournaments in New Zealand and further global stages.

Golf gives Anthony an avenue to maintain daily independence, structure, and pride - he trains four to five times per week with support to manage mobility challenges.

Beyond sport, Anthony’s identity as a Barngarla Aboriginal man adds depth and cultural strength to his story. He openly shares his experiences to inspire others facing disability, loss, or major life transitions.

Anthony Keenan represents the heart of adaptive sport: grit, growth, and the power of opportunity. His goal is simple but ambitious - continue climbing the international ranks, compete at the highest levels of All Abilities golf, and encourage others to “go out there and do it,” no matter their challenges.
